This cake is a chocolate lover’s dream: tender, fluffy, and truly moist thanks to the hot cocoa sauce that soaks into the crumb right after baking. Minimal technique, pantry-friendly ingredients, and reliably consistent results.
Ingredients
For the cake
- 4 eggs
- 5.6 oz | 160 g sugar
- 0.3 oz | 8 g vanilla extract
- 1.9 fl oz | 55 ml sunflower oil
- 0.4 cup | 100 ml milk
- 2 tsp baking powder
- 1.1 cup | 150 g flour
- 1.8 oz | 50 g cocoa powder
- 3.5 oz | 100 g chocolate shavings
For the chocolate sauce
- 3 tbsp cocoa powder, heaped
- 6.0 oz | 170 g sugar
- 0.2 oz | 6 g vanilla extract
- 5.0 fl oz | 140 ml sunflower oil
- 0.8 cup | 200 ml milk
Method
- Preheat the oven to 340°F | 170–175°C. Line a 8×8-inch | 20×20 cm square pan or a 9-inch | 22 cm round pan with parchment and grease the sides with oil.
- In a bowl, whisk the eggs with the sugar and vanilla extract until paler and slightly increased in volume, 2–3 minutes by hand or with a mixer on low speed.
- Pour in the sunflower oil and milk, then mix until smooth.
- Sift in the flour, cocoa powder, and baking powder. Add to the wet ingredients and fold gently until you have a silky batter with no lumps.
- Fold in the chocolate shavings and transfer the batter to the prepared pan. Smooth the surface.
- Bake for 30–35 minutes, until a wooden skewer comes out with a few moist crumbs but no wet batter.
- While the cake bakes, make the sauce: combine the cocoa powder, sugar, vanilla extract, sunflower oil, and milk in a saucepan. Set over medium heat and whisk constantly until nearly boiling; cook for 1–2 minutes, just until the sugar is fully dissolved. Do not let it boil hard.
- While still hot, prick the cake several times with a skewer and pour the hot sauce over it in 2–3 additions, letting it soak in evenly.
- Leave at room temperature for 20–30 minutes to absorb. Serve warm or completely cooled.
Serving and storage
Serve the cake as is, with a spoonful of thick cream, a scoop of vanilla ice cream, or a handful of fresh berries. Store tightly covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days; warm gently before serving if desired.

Tips and variations
- Pan size: use an 8×8-inch square pan or a 9-inch round pan; for a taller cake, use a smaller pan and add 3–5 minutes to the baking time.
- Chocolate: the shavings can be replaced with chocolate chips or finely chopped 50–70% dark chocolate.
- No mixer: a simple whisk is enough; there is no need to beat the eggs into a very airy foam.
- Sugar: if you like, reduce the sugar in the cake by 10–20%; the sauce will balance the sweetness.
- Flavor: add a pinch of salt and 1 tsp espresso powder to deepen the cocoa flavor.

FAQ
Can I use a different oil or milk?
Yes. Refined vegetable oil can be replaced with any neutral oil such as corn or canola. A mild olive oil is also acceptable. Any milk works: dairy milk with 2.5–3.2% fat or a plant-based milk with a neutral flavor such as almond or oat.
What if I do not have chocolate shavings?
Use chocolate chips or finely chopped chocolate instead. You can also add 2–3 tbsp chopped nuts; the cake will stay moist thanks to the sauce.
How do I make the cake without eggs?
Replace the 4 eggs with 8.5 oz | 240 g unsweetened applesauce or 7.1 oz | 200 g thick yogurt and add another 1/2 tsp baking powder. The texture will be a little denser, but the cake will remain moist.
