Avocado Toast: A Crisp 10-Minute Breakfast

Crisp toasted bread topped with a silky mash of ripe avocado, lime, good salt, and a pinch of chili — a fast, genuinely nourishing breakfast you can make in 10 minutes. Add cherry tomatoes, radish, or an egg on top for a more substantial everyday toast.

    Ingredients

    • Sandwich bread or country bread — 2 slices
    • Ripe avocado — 1
    • Lime or lemon juice — 1 tsp | 5 ml
    • Extra virgin olive oil — 1 tbsp | 15 ml
    • Salt — 1/4 tsp | 1.5 g
    • Ground black pepper — 1/4 tsp | 0.5 g
    • Chili flakes — a pinch
    • Cherry tomatoes — 4 (optional)
    • Herbs — a small handful (optional)
    • Poached or fried egg — 1 (optional)

    How to Make Avocado Toast

    1. Prepare the spread: cut the avocado open, remove the pit and skin. In a bowl, mash the flesh with a fork until creamy, then add the lime juice, salt, pepper, and half the olive oil. Stir until smooth.
    2. Toast the bread in a toaster or in a dry skillet until golden, about 2–3 minutes per side.
    3. Spread the avocado mixture over the toast. Top with cherry tomatoes or thinly sliced radish, sprinkle with chili flakes, and drizzle with the remaining oil.
    4. If you like, cook a poached egg or fry it to your preferred doneness and place it on top.
    5. Serve immediately while the bread is still crisp.

    Serving and Storage

Serve the toast right after assembling. You can make the avocado spread ahead of time: cover it directly with plastic wrap and refrigerate for up to 12 hours so it does not brown. Toast the bread just before serving.

    Tips and Variations

    • Choosing the avocado: it should yield slightly to gentle pressure. If it is a little underripe, add a touch more oil and mash more thoroughly.
    • Acidity: lime gives a brighter flavor, lemon a softer one. Adjust to taste.
    • Protein boost: a poached egg, seared salmon, cream cheese, or chickpeas will make the toast more filling.
    • Toppings: microgreens, radish, cucumber, sesame, feta, and sun-dried tomatoes all work beautifully.
    • Gluten-free: use gluten-free bread or rice cakes and reduce the oil slightly.

    FAQ

How do I keep the avocado spread from turning brown?

Add acid — lime or lemon juice — and cover the spread directly with plastic wrap. Refrigerate for no longer than 12 hours.

Can I make it without olive oil?

Yes. For a lighter version, simply add a bit more lime juice and a pinch of salt. The oil adds a silky texture and fuller flavor, but it is not essential.

What bread is best for avocado toast?

Dense breads work best: sourdough, whole grain, or rye. They hold the topping and stay crisp longer than soft sandwich bread.
